History and Holly Home Tour Sunday, December 3

Like any city founded more than two centuries ago, Covington boasts a rich history. That’s why you don’t want to miss this year’s History & Holly Home Tour, Covington holiday tradition. “We do it every year as a family. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season,” said one longtime Covington resident at last year’s event.

The tour is a short walk in the area of S. America St. and S. Jahncke Ave., featuring homes from the early 1900’s and later. Tickets may be purchased in advance a stores, including the Southern Hotel, Braswell Drugs, an Covington City Hall, or at bontempstix.com. The event will take place on December 3rd from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Day of event tickets will also be available.

Covington Heritage Foundation President Verret said the tour came out the organization’s mission to preserve Covington’s culture, character, and community, and it serves as the foundation’s primary fundraiser to underwrite its many educational programs.

Mystery of History Tour of 500 Block of North New Hampshire St.

On Sunday, October 15th, 2023, the “History and Mysteries” Tour was held for the 500 Block N. New Hampshire St. About 50 people stolled down the block and listened to the stories of old, how the St. Tammany Ice and Manufacturing Co. provided electricity for the town, how Covington Motors sold thousands of new cars over the years, how the train station delivered freight to Talley’s Feed and Seed.

 

Special Presentation on People We Knew, People We Know

The Covington Heritage Foundation hosted its fifth event of the season on July 20th, 2023. The special presentation took place at the Fuhrmann Center on Jefferson Avenue. Mayor Mark Johnson shared share several stories of landmark Covington places and personalities.

Antiques & Uniques Festival Held Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, 2023

The Covington Heritage Foundation held its “Covington Antiques and Uniques Festival” on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, with a variety of antiques, vintage collectibles and crafts, and architectural salvage on display and for sale.

Food, music and more accompanied the free fun-filled event.The festival took place at the Covington Trailhead, 419 N. New Hampshire Street, in Covington, Louisiana.

History and Holly Home Tour Held December 4, 2022

The Covington Heritage Foundation held its 2022 History and Holly Home Tour. Hundreds of people turned out under cloudy skies to take part in the annual event, a Northshore Holiday tradition.

Dozens of friend and family groups walked down the streets south of Christ Episcopal Church touring the festively-decorated homes and enjoying the sounds of the season from the strolling carolers.

 

 

Whisperings Cemetery Tour Held October 30th, 2022

A living history tour of Covington Cemetery No. 1 was held on October 30th, 2022, with modern day actors portraying historic personages who are buried in the city’s oldest cemetery.  As groups of 20 toured the grounds, the living-history actors talked about the lives their characters led.

Characters of Covington Share Stories

The Covington Heritage Foundation presented its “Characters of Covington” program on July 16, 2022, at the Fuhrmann Auditorium, 317 North Jefferson Avenue, in Covington. Three longtime Covington residents with key impact on the Covington community, shared their stories and accomplishments.  Ida James, Dottie Frederick and Larry Smith recounted growing up and living in mid-20th century Covington, mentioning the icehouse, when the telephone comes to town, the schools, dating on horseback, and movies at the Majestic.

History & Holly Tour December 5th

General Membership Meeting

The Covington Heritage Foundation event held a general membership meeting on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. It was the final general meeting of the year.

History Showcased On New Hampshire St. 200 Block

The Covington Heritage Foundation offered a guided tour of the 200 block of North New Hampshire Street on Sunday, October 3, 2021, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The event was another in the group’s “History and Mystery” events showcasing individual blocks in downtown Covington. The history of the buildings and businesses (and the individual personalities that made them a success) was featured, with several knowledgeable people on hand to share their memories. The Antiques & Uniques Festival Held

 The Covington Antiques & Uniques Festival was held at the Covington Trailhead Saturday, April 17th, and Sunday, April 18th. A number of tents lined the streets, and many of the displays were indoors at the Trailhead Museum, under the Trailhead porch, and at the Firehouse Events Center.

A wide variety of collectibles were on display, from antique ironwork and signage, to jewelry, photographs, and yard ornaments. There were also plants, stained glass, and vintage toys.

Christi and the Rascals provided the musical entertainment, and a number of food trucks were on hand for the hungry.

The Covington Heritage Foundation event was held in conjunction with the St. Tammany Art Association Covington Art Market.

Past Events

History and Holly Home Tour 2019

The Covington Heritage Foundation held its annual History and Holly Home Tour in December, featuring two historic churches! This annual event has quickly become a northshore holiday tradition.

Four beautiful homes in the W. 19th, W. 20th and Jefferson avenues area were spotlighted, as well as Covington Presbyterian Church, and St. Peter Catholic Church.

Veterans Appreciation Reception

Veterans Appreciation Reception was held at the Bogue Falaya Hall at Covington City Hall Monday, May 27. The special event welcomed more than 100 armed forces veterans for food, refreshments and musical entertainment. History and Mystery of the 300 block of North New Hampshire

Approximately 80 people turned out for the History and Mystery tour of the 300 block of North New Hampshire Street on Sunday, May 5, 2019, beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing to 8 p.m.

Guest speakers took participants on tours of the Southern Hotel, the Star Theatre, the EOC Building (Old Courthouse), and the St. Tammany Farmer Newspaper Office. Here are some pictures.
